Default Fuel System Questions

Hi Everyone,

My 96 850 NA is starved for fuel. I first noticed it hard starting about a month ago. Now it takes about 4 cranks for it to start. I can hear the fuel pump humming when I first turn the key. On the road it runs very sluggishly, especially on the highway.

So far, I replaced the fuel pump relay, fuel injection relay, and fuel filter. It runs the same. There's no CEL and no codes and I'm not sure what to try next...

Any ideas?

Thanks!

This really only leaves clogged lines, fuel pump itself, and the injectors. Easiest to do would be checking the fuel pressure. Even though you hear the pump humming at start, if there is no fuel pressure it means its not working properly. start with that. From what you said sounds like the pump is starting to give out.

Get a pressure gauge on the fuel rail. That will tell you whats going on. Hard starts can be tune up components, dirty fuel injectors, low compression, etc.

Diagnosis is good, and so I would also advocate a fuel pressure gauge in your toolbox instead of random repair. However, I admit that in the case of the volvo, it's really hard to attach with the engine together. You need an angled fitting, and I don't have one.
