Same problem with my 2000 V40. If I push in on the glovebox and then operate the latch it opens. I haven't got around to diagnosing the cause yet.

I usually give it two hard punches and push the door in and gently up while pulling on the handle. The latch/ handle mechanism needs to be replace.

Or ... you could fix it before your method doesn't work ...

Default Dealer Tool

Can't find the thread, but the dealer has a tool to open this without drilling the front of your glove box..

It's already been replaced since it was my uncle's car, he never figured my secret procedure to open it and he and the dealer had to pry it open with a screwdriver and a hammer. Really messed it up a bit, but it's all good.

My only caution in this situation, is don't try and manhandle it. It is common for people to do this and break the lower dash plastic mounts, that the cover screws in to. Take your time brother. Worst case scenario. Stick a hacksaw blade in the opening and saw the mechanism apart. I'll send you a new one gratis(I.E. free), if you cover the $2 shipping.

I've seen a lot of the doors in junk yards that are in great shape. My guess is that they cost less than $20.

There is an airbag close to it so I wouldn't recommend banging on it to often. It may decide to hit back.
