When I bought my used volvo 850 estate, the previous owner told me the noise under the front carpet was a golf ball stuck in the floor vent. After some probing and a stick and some industrial vacuming, I understood it must be in the hollow surrounding the plastic vent. I have tried propping the car up on both sides and looked around with a flashlight and a screwdriver, to no avail.

Has anyone ever removed the front carpet and removed the floor vent cover? I think it is my last solution, barring a stroke of genious from a volvo guru.

Pull the seat out and the carpet will pretty much pull up to gain access to the Vent.
If you want to remove it totally then you also have to remove the passenger side seat and the Center Console. It is a one peice from carpet.

 

i had the same problem. i used a coat hanger bent with a hook. with some luck i managed to scoop it out

 

I finally had my way with the floor jack, a 3 Hp shop vac, looking like a pretzel in the back seat. Also found 3 pens, 2 energy bars, 2(!!!) golf *****, and various cough drops.
