Good deal?
So... A neighbor of one of my customers has a '94 850 NA that he is selling. It's got leather, alloys, moonroof, etc. and looks pretty good inside and out, especially for the mileage. It has around 220k on it- he's not 100% sure, since the odometer quit around 210k last year (he says. The car runs and drives, but (according to him, I haven't had the chance to really look at it yet) it needs strut mounts, ball joints, a PCV system, an A/C evaporator, and it leaks oil. Basically, it's a typical Volvo 850
He's asking $400, but told me I could have it for $300, and I'll bet he'd take $250 for it. If it weren't for the high miles, I'd be right on it (or if it were a wagon, as I'm looking for a beater 850 wagon for those times when the S70 won't cut it. What do you guys think? if I buy it to fix up and sell, what do you think I could get out of a '94 that looks pretty good, runs well, but has high miles?

Yeah, you might be able to make a few bucks off of it. For 220k miles though, it's gotta be in pretty good shape in and out to get 2 grand for it. You probably have about 300-500 dollars worth of repairs there, not too bad, make a quick grand.
If you wish to keep it for a while, my replies in the following thread would help.

Well... I got it home. It leaks oil from just about every seal in the engine, EXCEPT the rear main, and the ORIGINAL timing belt is soaked with oil. (how the heck it didn't break, I don't know) The strut mounts are definitely bad, it needs a tune- up and a PCV system, and I think it probably will need oil pan o- rings. But it drove okay on the freeway coming home, aside from a little funny business from the trans early on, but I think that was from the car sitting for several months, as it all went away by the time I got it home. I'll flush the trans and then get a start on the oil leaks. The body is in good shape, aside from a little dent below the left taillight, and the interior is pretty good, though the trim panels on the bottom of the dash are gone. I'll try to put some pics up tomorrow... it's nothing special, but it'll be a fun project and a way to make a little extra money.
I paid $1400 for a 1995 non turbo sedan - green - 170,000 recently broken odom. Found broken sway bar link - changed one cv axle, brakes all the way around - fixed odom - found broken thermostat - fixed that last night - changed lower a arm - even after all of this I am still happy that I am getting 22- 29mpg. Fun to drive. I should add that my passenger window rocker switch is bad and is next on the list to be fixed. I hope to work out all of the bugs by 2010. HaHa.
