Grinding is usually metal to metal..
Remember you can only see the front of the rotor...
You need to pull all the wheels and check for yourself, Dont go on what someone told you.

You can usually feel if the pads are gone as well.

Never trust anyone who's is selling you or sold you a vehicle. Yes they may be perfectly honest to a fault then again they may get you killed.
Pull all the wheels and take a look at both sides of all four. If you're getting a grinding sound when you apply the brakes it pretty much has to be that one of the pads wore out. Maybe it has new pads because there was a problem that wasn't fixed but just covered up by new pads. If a caliper gets hung up and no longer "slides" or floats it will eat the inside pad quickly but leave the outside pad (the one you can see through the wheel) looking good. That's the problem with someone saying they did a brake job. Was it just a pad slap where all they did was push the piston back and replace the pads (poor quality job) or did they clean and lube the caliper slides, crack open the bleeder and then retract the piston discarding the fluid in the caliper rather than pushing it backward into the ABS and master cylinder. Did they replace the rotors or have them turned so the pads have a flat smooth surface to grab a hold of? This is what you need to find out.
