Default Grinding coming from instrument panel/broken odometer

Perhaps you Volvo geniuses can help me with this problem.

My odometer stopped working and now makes a horrible grinding noise. Here's the awful story:

We just bought a beautiful '94 850 sedan with a broken odometer. Everything seemed to be in order: we'd buy a replacement gear and get the thing fixed. So we took it into the shop to get the car serviced and they insisted on doing a "diagnostic" before they'd fix the odometer. We foolishly agreed, only to hear that the gear was broken. Gosh, we could'a told you that.

They put the dash back together and we ordered the gear online. When we got back from the shop, it started making a horrible grinding noise coming from the dashboard when we traveled above 50 mph. It's loud enough that you can't hear the radio. When we complained to the shop, the offered to knock off part of the price of going back in and fixing the gear.

Well, the gear didn't work and the grinding remained when we took it back in the next week. My husband hunted down a new instrument panel from a salvage yard, hoping that the motor driving the odometer was causing the grinding. Well the new instrument panel apparently was grinding too. The shop promised to take a few more hours to find the grinding noise and fix it. Many hundreds of dollars later, the grinding remains, the odometer still doesn't work, and we're mad.

Any advice? I thank you so much for reading my rant.

That is pretty strange but should be pretty easy to find if they run it on the lift.
Does it do it with the speedo assembly out of the car?
Is your husband pretty handy with tools?

We're handy with tools, we just happen to live in the city and can barely find parking spaces, let alone space to work on the car. That's why we took it into the shop.
