Default Harsh bang when putting transmission in reverse.

Hoping someone can help here without the disappointing news of 'your transmission is bad'.

I have a 95 850 Turbo Wagon, Auto tranny. Whenever I put the transmission in reverse I get a harsh bang into gear. Forward is fine, driving is fine, downshifting is fine. Transmission runs great except for reverse. I have tried different scenerios and the only one that works if is I put my foot on the brake then rev the engine up a tad then put it in reverse it does not bang.

Thoughts?

i guess we can start simple.

are you good on fluid?
how old is the fluid?
have you checked all motor mounts?

answers:

Good on Fluid, replaced the fluid in hopes that it might fix this issue. Motor mounts are good. Replaced the upper just months ago.

how about your CV joints/axles? (more than likly would do it in more than just reverse, but worth asking)

Does it do it all the time, or only when it has warmed up?

Mine was doing the same and replacing the axle solved the problem. If you get under the car with wheels at normal position (not on jacked car with wheels hanging) and hold the inner CV joint with one hand and shaft with other hand and try to check for play between them. Do this test with tires at diffferent positons (rotate them by about 90 degrees if you dont feel any play at one position)
Mine was also showing little wobble during hard excelleration at some higher speeds when I had this harsh bang issue.

Additional info:

When the engine is cold, as in first start in the morning...no bang.
Warm Engine...bang
Rev the engine to about 1200rpm...no bang.
idle engine....bang.

Mine started out the exact same way. Later on it started dropping out of gear when downshifting. I think it's a line pressure issue.

I would still check the CV shafts. Any help from a second person will be really good becuase then you can get under the car, with all safety first in place, and ask the person to engage the gear and disengage it while you are looking at the shaft. I am very sure that you will see one of the shaft jumping while creating that noise.

ya we know that, you have said that before. what we need to know from you is where the bang is coming from and what is making it do it.

we have suggested:
cv joint
fluid issue
pressure line issue
mounting issue
and a few others.

Respectfully I have to put the CV as a possible cause out the door. The bang is so harsh and with the engines violent slam it cannot be the CV. You can put it in reverse, brake and hold it there. Put in N then back in reverse and get a big bang out of it. You can be rolling backwards and do the same. If I put it in Drive at any time the transition is smooth. Raise the RPMs a bit and put it in reverse and there is no bang.

sounds like u blew a bearing in the trans...

and when u raise the rpm's enough the shaft centers it self from centrifugal force. thus no bang.

Well, sort of. I blew up my motor then pulled the engine and trans out of a T-5R. Now I am running a manual so the answer is no.

Blow the engine, replace the engine and transmission, no "bang".

Hope I don't hear a "bang" ............

my trans does the exact same thing. Had the trans out and everything looks ok my guess is a bad valve body / pressure issue (also verified by transmission shop). I'm just going to live with it.
