Harsh bang when putting transmission in reverse.

Thats my story.
I filled the coolant reservoir up and did not put the cap back on. Drove up into the mountains. The coolant level switch apparently was broken and did not warn me. Overheated the engine...really bad. Blew the head gasket, seriously warped the head. Had the car towed home where it sat for one week before I pulled the head to assess the damage. I waited to long and this was my demise.
So I bought a 95 T-5R and pulled the engine and trans out of it. I knew I had a problem with the reverse so I put the T-5R transmission in with the motor. Problem solved. Thats my story.

thanks man, just let me know when you get yours fixed.
@ boxpin. the head was really blown. ouch. l dont know why alot of 850s have this problem.l had a 94 850 and it did the same thing till l got this 97 850. does the same thing. l think its something with 850s after the transmission goes over a certain miles.

There are only so many things that can cause it. If you've checked the half shafts for play in the CV joints, the hub bearings, the struts and control arms, engine mounts, body mounts and brake calipers to the mounts for play ,,,,,, you have come down to the point of it being transmission internal.

What I had was internal. I know there is a lot of talk about it being mounts, etc. I think when you have it you know thats not the case. Its a pretty abrupt slam. Best think you can do is flush the fluid.

this has been going on for a while now. l made my mechanic take a look at it and when l put it to reverse the engine itself moves big time.u can clearly see it move like something is off the engine.he told me the engine mounts are going bad.l hope thats only thing making it bang like that.l will change the mounts and see what happens.if that doesnt solve the problem l will then have to live with it and save some money towards getting another car.not a volvo.lol

good news
The good news for you is that if it was an internal transmission problem, it probably would have went by now and you'd be paying big money to have it fixed.
Funny you mention you won't buy another Volvo, I've always been told they are very reliable vehicles, and I'm sure they are... but I've had nothing but problems with my 98 S70. It has 150k miles on it, and every month it seems something else goes wrong, each time more expensive than the last.
Let me know if fixing the engine mounts solves your problem!

Too funny, guys! My '94 Turbo wagon does exactly the same thing. When it is warm, and you put it in reverse. Bang! When tranny is cold, no bang. I thought my car was a one off. Been doing this since November now. I have a bunch of parts for the car which is sitting in garage waiting to go in (Bilstein HD's, Momo steering wheel and hub, IPD springs, 17" wheels and 215/45-17 tires, performance brake pads, Iquus boost gauge). Gonna hold off putting this stuff on for now, to see what you guys come up with for a fix. If auto transmission needs to be rebuilt, I will just go and buy another 850 Turbo or S70 Turbo. Then put on the awaiting goodies onto that car.
