heat not working in below 0F
I'm having a problem with the heat in my car. I live in Chicago, and it's been below 0F for a while, and it's not going to let up any time soon. What seems to be happening is that when I start my car, and let it run (850GLT), then it warms up, and the gage on the dash goes up to approximately the middle of the gage. When I drive it, the gage goes down, and so does the heat. I don't know what the problem is. I know it's cold, but will that be an issue if it's below 0F, and I'm driving 50mph for a while? If anyone has any clues, or has had this problem, please let me know what I can do. Thanks!!!!

Read that. If the tstat is stuck open and it's cold outside, your engine will have problems maintaining normal operating temperature.

RE: heat not working in below 0F
Hello Edward,
Greetings from Chicagoland.
My opinion on your trouble is pretty much the same as everyone else. The coolant temp gauge might go up to 3 O'Clock position after start-up, but as you rev the engine while driving and frigid air passes through the radiator, the thermostat might be opening prematurely, letting the coolant temp go down, which in turn deprives you of the cabin heat.
Does your 850 have a maintenance record? If so, check to see if the thermostat has ever been replaced. If not, you might want toreplaceit with anOEM thermostat (German Wahler or French Vernet, I used Vernet 87-degree C and so far it's working good).
Even with Chicagoland's harsh winter, the heater should produce air that is hot enough to warm up the cabin. So, check the thermostat as it is probably starting to fail.
Good luck,
JPN

RE: heat not working in below 0F
^I think I have the same problem. I've noticed that when it was below 0F (Now it isn't, we hit 18 degrees today in MN. LOL), my heat wasn't working as well/strong.
I highly recommend buying a thermostat from FCP Groton. I did my own research and they were the cheapest. My total was about 15 shipped, wheras other places typically charged $12-15 and shipping was around $7-8 bucks. So when you buy it from FCP, you save 5 bucks (money is money. )
It's very easy to replace but so far, it's been too cold/dirty for me to do it...I really should get on it though...
