Default hello - newbie with an 850 question

hello all:

i have a 1994 850 with the standard 168 horse engine. i changed the timing belt at about 70000 km after seven years. it now has 134000 km and is almost 15 years old. having been oil sprayed and well maintained it is rust-free and a joy to drive.

the question is: how much longer in terms of mileage and time do you think i can drive it without another timing belt change?

thanks, mike

Welcome to the forum.

Volvo says you can go 105K before changing. Most on here suggest changing every 70 - 75K.

Default thanks for info

yeah thanks, that sounds about right. ive been using synthetic oil for the last ten years and most of the driving is highway so ill probably stretch it out a bit.

ive got my eye on a c30 but even discounted its about 8000 dollars more here in Canada for the same freaking car!

cheers, mike

1993: Replace at every 60,000 miles (as per the owner's manual)/5 years.
1994-1997: Replace at every 70,000 miles (as per the owner's manual)/5 years.

No one mentions 5-year interval (except Tech), but the reason for this is that any rubber parts start to show signs of deterioration after about 5 years.

Don't forget to replace peripheral parts (hydraulic tensioner, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, water pump-only if leaking; genuine Volvo WP seems bullet proof).

NEVER stretch the replacement interval; 100,000 miles is way too long. Also, using synthetic oil has no effect on the timing belt replacement interval. Since your engine is not turbocharged, you should be fine with generic 10W-30 (5W-30 for frigid region).
