HELP - I just want to install one wire
I want to install one single wire from the dashboard into the engine compartment on my 850 station wagon.
No matter how hard I look I cannot find any place where I can wiggle one through.
All the wiring seems to be done in looms and connectors.
Am I missing something.
Can anyone suggest a possible routewhere I might be able to getonewire through?
It's driving me crazy.

RE: HELP - I just want to install one wire
Hello Mr. Volgrrr,
Currently my 850 isin the hands of the actual owner (my boss's cousin), so I cannot do further research. I'm sorry that I'm useless at the moment.
For the time being, I wonder if you could either guide the wire in one of theplastic wire guides(though it probably is challenging and there's a chance of damaging other wires), or drill a hole on the firewall, just big enough to allow one wire and put some weather-strip glue or equivalent around it to keep moisture out.
When I get the 850 back I will do a research, but hopefully you can find a way before that.
Cheers,
JPN

RE: HELP - I just want to install one wire
Hi Volgrrr and JPN,
As Mr JPN said the usual way to do this is run along other
wires in the harness (for low current wiring) or to drill a hole in
the firewall. If you drill a hole in the firewall be sure to put a
grommet or something similar in the hole to protect the wire
against sharp metal edges.
If you simply need a power lead (+12v) at a reasonable
current level you can probably take this from the back of the
cigarette lighter.
If you need a wire that carries a signal of some sort (low current)
you may be able to find an unused position in one of the connectors
(no pins) and install your own pins and wires. You might also
find an unused wire (maybe for an uninstalled option) in one
of the harness branches and hijack this wire for your own use.
If none of the above works, there are high quality bulkhead
mount weatherproof connectors available at major electronic
distributors that can be installed in the firewall. Just be sure
the connector and wiring are sufficient for the current draw
in your application. Also wiring that carries significant current
can rise in temperature when in use, so it is a good idea to run
it alongside the existing wiring. If you bury it in an existing
bundle you may raise the temperature of the existing harness
above the limits the manufacturer designed for.
Sorry I'm extremely time limited and have to get out of here.
Best wishes, John

RE: HELP - I just want to install one wire
On my 95 Turbo, (and others too as I am told) there is a hollow plastic factory wire loom in the engine compartment that wires can easily runthrough to the passenger compartment. On my car the loom was to the left and slightly down from the brake master cylinder resevoir. The engine compartment end of the loomhas a removable plastic cap on it and the cap has what looks like four nipples on it (no laughs please). What I did was remove the cap, and simply run the wire(s) down the loom, The wires come out under the dash to the left of the brake pedal. To complete the task, I simply cut the tip off of one of the cap nipples, run the wire through it, replace the cap top, and put a dab of silicone around the wire where it comes out the nipple. Viola, a watertight seal and no drilling required.
Hope this helps,
Glenn
