Default help! my AC has a mind of its own!

I have a 96 850 Turbo - recently the a.c. starting turning on and off by itself. It started a few weeks ago and would go from off to full-on for a few seconds, then off again. It was intermittent at first and now it stays on as long as the car is on, regardless of where the slide is to select intensity.

The red light to indicate the ac on/off on the climate control panel does not work either, but the back light that turns on with the headlights to illuminate the panel does.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on where to start?

I've seen behind the slide. The slide controls a mechancal arm so if the arm isn't moving it must be electrical.

Is it the blower that is turning on and off? If so, it is regardless of whether or not the A/C is on or not.

I have a wiring harness on the way - hopefully I can find the bad spot.

It is the blower that comes on, not necessarily the ac.

I have the opposite problem. My blower will shut off if I run it on high for too long. I replaced the blower motor and still have the problem. I just learned to live with it

Does your unit have an "auto" option? Wonder if the ACC control unit is going...

there is an auto option on the slide. I have tried matching the climate control temp. with the inside and outside temps to see if that was triggering the problem, but it goes regardless of the temp. on the dial and regardless of slide position.

I have tried to read the codes a few times and nothing has been triggered.

I would try and buy another control unit and see if that works. Essentially, where those buttons and slide are on the AC unit, is a computer unit. That will actually slide out and unplug. All you have to do is put the noew one and see what happens. I had a similar issue with my AC when I purchased my 850 last year, so I purchased a new controler unit off a member off here for $25 bucks and switched it out. No problems after that!

Found a quick temporary fix - pull the fuse.

My Haynes manual shows that removal of the climate control panel is done by pulling two of the dials and unscrewing two screws .... I pulled the dials and there are no screws to remove.

Will I need to remove the upper dash cover to remove the climate control panel? I pulled the radio face out to gain access to the bottom of the c.c. panel to push it out but no luck.

Also, which I will post in the classifieds as well, I am looking to buy a climate control panel for a 96 850 turbo.

Thanks

Slide the radio out and reach your hand in behind the climate module and push it out.
The manual control setup only has the 2 screws.

fixed the problem with a new (used) climate control module.

Total cost: $32 shipped.

Thanks for the help, Tech, I probably wouldn't have used that much force to get the old one out - but I kept thinking, "Tech said so" - and eventually it popped out.

I think we all go thru that"tech said so" bit!... Glad the new Control unit fixed that. Those are notorious for going out!

Definitely!! If I am doing something and tech said to do it that way, I do it that way. Sometimes I will come back in to my computer and reread what he said though just to make sure I didn't remember it wrong.

I have a 1999 volvo V70. I had the same Aircon problem more so when on High full blast maximum Cold, it was caused by low voltage from failing Alternator so Battery was not keeping up the Power, just a thought, Low voltage causes weird things to happen in the Electrics
