horrors.... my hood is locked shut unable to open
other day I was concerned because THE hood on my 1996 850 Turbo was not closing properly , it was held shut on only the left (driver's side) the right side (passenger side) latch was in OPEN position , so I removed both latches and release cable, lubricated cable and latch hinges making sure jaws open and closed easily, put them back on seemed to line up when closing my hood , and pulled hood release handle inside car , but to my horror the latch on the RIGHT SIDE WOULD NOT OPEN JAWS to allow hood to open normally, it is NOW permanently shut, either release cable is stretched because of age, or other I need to get the hood open WHAT CAN I DO ? HOW DO I GET AT THE RELEASE CABLE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE TO OPEN JAWS OF LATCH ? thru the headlight or side light next to the headlight? VERY FRUSTRATING INDEED HELP?
I know with mine every couple of months the safety catch starts to get stiff and if I don't catch it in time and get some lube in there I'll pull the latch and the hood doesn't pop. That mess of linkage for the little plastic "handle" to pop out from the grill will keep the hood closed.
yes it took a '20" year Volvo mechanic about 15 minutes to open my locked hood something which simply amazed me , since one volvo service adviser who I talked to at Fredericton Dealership had told me it was a"three hour job" Mmmmmm who's getting hosed here?
yes it turns out back when I initially removed the hood latches to lubricate them ,I installed the passenger side one (backwards) so when release cable was not able to open the jaws on latch, thus the hood remained permanently shut. At the Volvo garage a "20 year" mechanic and with his skills in relative short time (15 minutes) managed to free latch and open the hood of my 850 turbo ... I was told later it was a error on my behalf when I attempted to rein-install hood latches, which coincidentally should be frequently lubricated , but avoid removing them from position, lesson learned the hard way guess, don't play (backyard) mechanic with your Volvo, unless you know exactly what the hell your doing..I am still in awe in which speed and precision these mechanics are able to fix the problem showing ofcourse they know their Volvo cars period. Hope you print this for other volvo owners to pay heed, the hood on my 850 Turbo opens and closes like it is supposed to now, if your friends ever suggest to me again they can fix your problem , DON'T TRY leave it for the experts ,save embarrassment , time and $$$$ ,don' t open your hood to strangers , thank you.
What's the fix for the S70 hoods that don't pop up when the handle is pulled from the inside. My neighbors car is like this, takes 2 people to open the hood. One pulling the handle and the other lifting the hood.
