How my garage just got a little bit cooler.
When we bought the house, the garage was bare studs. I put up R19 insulation in the walls, used blow-in insulation for the ceiling, and then put up 1/2" foam, then drywall over that.
I heat it with a 30,000 BTU heater that has a built in thermostat and a blower. The heater runs off natural gas, and all I did was tee off a line from where the gas came into my house in the basement and ran a line straight out to the garage. When I initially installed the heater, I tested it out by turning it all the way to high and left the garage closed for a while. When I came back out, the temp inside the garage was 92 degrees, and it was still running. Outside temp at the time was 23 degrees. Needless to say, I really didnt need for it to get any hotter in there. I usually leave it around 50 degrees. The garage door is well insulated too, and maintaining the 55 degree mark has the heater coming on for MAYBE 5 minutes every hour and a half or so.
yes, I did the work myself. Coming this summer, I will be adding racks on the ceiling at the front of the garage (over the door) so we can store our off-season wheels (and probably other stuff as well) and will be sealing the floor. I'll probably add some more cabinets at the front of the garage as well. I already have 2 levels of shelving on each side that run approximately 8 ft, which is where I keep all my car related stuff like wax, degreaser, oil, filters, parts I have to install, etc. Oh, and I have a washing machine from the mid 1920s out there as well. it has a powered wringer on it, which is GREAT for getting water out of terrycloth towels when im drying a car.

Procomm is the brand I bought. i got it at Menards for like $145 back in October.
I should clarify: I put the r19 in the walls, then put up 1/2" foamboard over the studs, then hung the drywall on top of the foam.
I like the washer because it has no timer on how it cycles....that way I can put in absolutely NASTY rags with some hot water (i have a hot and cold water spigot in the garage as well) and just let it run for a couple hours to get things really clean. Also, the wringer on the top of it comes in super handy for getting big terrycloth towels that I dry the car with wrung out.
