Default I smell fuel

Hey I have a turbo 850 and i keep smelling fuel along with a P0172 code and bad gas mileage. All the vacuum lines are new and tight. Would a rich fuel mixture give off such a strong smell, or am I actually leaking fuel from the line?

Well I'm guessing you're not really looking for a yes or no answer here right? So I'm going to need you to be more specific about your car. Like when you say you are smelling fuel. Do you mean the smell of raw gasoline, Or an exhaust like fuel smell? If so, Is it after you park, while your driving, when the cars idling? Where is the smell coming from? (engine compartment, rear of the car?) Is your car hard to start? Does it smoke? How does it drive? Are you sure you replaced all of the vacuum lines? Or just the visible ones. (everyone seems to forget the one on the side on the manifold) In all honesty, I could run down a plethora of possible causes. But would really prefer more info to help you narrow it down. Otherwise, I could fill a book telling you things to check.

Have you checked your fuel regulator? you could be sucking raw fuel into the engine if it is bad.

What he said. Ck the vac line to the regulator; if there's fuel in there replace the fuel pressure regulator.

If that ain't it ck the fuel pressure at the rail; should be about 42-43 psi at idle; higher than that by several psi momentarily when you blip the throttle.

Sorry I will be a little more specific. I smell raw fuel in the cabin, typically during city driving. That is when the gas mileage gets bad. Highway driving no smell and mpg goes way up. The connections to the fuel regulator are tight. And there is no fuel in the vacuum line. I will check the fuel pressure.

I had a similar problem just today. Long story short I smelled raw fuel while driving. Got out, popped the hood, and saw that the rubber hose that connects the hard fuel line to the fuel rail had split, and I was dripping raw gas onto the hot motor. Fixed it with two new hose clamps and a piece of 5/16 fuel line.

Moral of the story, if you smell raw fuel when driving, get out and check, as there is most likely a gas leak somewhere, and if not fixed, the results may not be pretty.
