Default ignition switch

Well somebody broke into the car('96 850 NA) I bought my Mom. Which I was going to give to her on Monday as a surprise. Now I can't even move it. The person tried to jam a screw driver into the ignition, now the key won't even go int the hole. I order an ignition switch from FCP, but didn't realize it was just the electrical part. Does anyone know how expensive a new ignition switch will be, or if the one I have is rebuildable? I thought the keys had an immobilizer in them, so does that mean I will have to buy a whole new key as well? Any help would be much appreciated.

P.S. I hate thieves!

You can replace just the lock cylinder. If you want it coded to the car it will take a week or so to get it.
If you can handle using one key to open the door and another to start it the Dealer should have a generic one in stock or can get it overnight.

They lock cylinder isn't that bad to replace. Heck if you can find a car in the junk yard with the key's you can buy a used one.

Follow Tech’s suggestions.

Of course, who wouldn’t?

Agreed. They try to get things without effort. Well, the guy must have tried hard to get your car but that does not count as an effort.

On your '96 it shouldn't be chipped. Your biggest problem is going to bet getting the oldcylinder out since the key needs to be in position I for the cylinder release to work. Perhaps a Dremell Tool to grind away at the release pin which is at the top of the housing will get you there.

I have an ignition tumbler and key on my desk, PM me if you want it. The real PITA for your mom will be that the door key and the ignition key will be different.

Just add a aftermarket keyless entry (if the car doesnt have one and then you will have only one key (the newer one) for normal use of the car.

I have gotten cylinders out before without a key. Once you find the release pin I have used an awl and tapped the awl down on the pin till the lock cylinder popped out.

My car has been diagnosed by a shop to have a new ignition lock cylinder ordered from Volvo. They're quoting 350 for the part and 350 for labor for 700 total. Is that cost fair?

It is only the cylinder itself I wonder where they are coming up with $350.00 labor from?

It takes about 30 minutes to replace if they are only doing the cylinder.

Also I think the parts were alot cheaper.
