Thumbs down I'm baffled! What is this sound?!!

Here's the deal, my car makes this strange metallic sound ONLY when turning right, but the sound is only coming from the left side of the car. I don't think it is a CV joint for two reasons:

1. The whole half shaft on that side was replaced with a brand new one a month and a half ago and it looks to be in tip-top condition.
2. This sound does not match what my previously clicking CV joints sounded like.

So, what is it? A wheel bearing? Suspension?

My car may have actually been making this sound for a long time, for I remember thinking I heard something when I picked the car up right after the halfshafts were replaced, but not worrying about it since it was just back from being worked on. Heck, I imagine it probably made this sound BEFORE I had the old halfshafts replaced, but I just couldn't hear it over the awefully clicking CVs.

Please help! It's driving me nuts!

Sounds like a metal shield, perhaps the brake dust shield. Bad wheel bearings don't typically sound like that. I can't t think of a suspension noise that represents either.

How can I check that? Can I check that without taking the wheel off? I don't have a jack.

That would make sense, considering I noticed it after I got it back from the mechanic, who also replaced the brake rotors and pads.

+1 thats the dust shield. It's going to be a lot easier if you take the wheel off. All you need to do is bend it back away from the rotor, and your good to go. It's a very common occurrence when brakes are changed, or axel work is performed.

Just noticed you didn't have a jack. Looks like your going to have to slide under it then, to bend it back. Otherwise, take it back to the mechanic, and have him do it.

Wow, I LOVE you all right now!!

Without taking the wheel off, but rather just turning the steering wheel all the way to one side, I was able to tap the left brake shield, and sure enough it rattled and made exactly the same sound that I was hearing, but when I checked the right shield it was secure and made no sound. Thanks guys!

You're welcome! Glad it was simple and free to fix, too.

Dude, go to a junk yard and get a jack. Not that you want to be under the car with one of those jacks but what are you going to do WHEN you get a flat?

Oh, I have the one in the trunk, but I don't trust it for ANYTHING other than changing a flat in an absolute emergency. It's a friend of mine who has a nice garage jack and jack stands that I use for maintenance. I suppose I should just say, "Right now, I don't have access to a jack that I consider reliable for this job," rather than "I don't have a jack." Sorry about the confusion!

Also, I NEVER go under any car supported solely by a jack, whether its a trunk jack or a mechanics jack. It would suck to be a pancake!

Smart Man!!

Also smart enough to know you don't need to own a jack and stands, you just need to know a friend who does...
