Intermittent Rough Running
ORIGINAL: jefhon2112
First off, I'm admittedly a novice. I work on my 850 when and how I can. I'm still significantly inexperienced though.
However, I do know that Volvos have a computer memory that gets reset whenever the battery is disconnected. The memory needs something like 4 weeks to "relearn" the driving conditions, driver's habits, etc. A Volvo tech told me about this. He said that sometimes a VOlvo will run "rough" while the computer memory is "relearning".
Again, I honestly don't know if this is related or will help. I thought it was worth jumping in though. At the risk of seeming like a real novice.
I find your problems and conversation here fascinating.
Good luck!
Jeff

I never knew anything about a learning computer inside a Volvo. Is this true for the 1993 850 GLT?
If only the computer would learn to close the valve all the way or something, I would be fine.
Hey tech, how about I take the head off and send it to you. Look like you need more problems to deal with. Just kidding.

Im home today with SICK KIDS!!!!!
If I could only get something done I would be happy!!!
For the computer It is not that drastic that it would make the car run rough till it learned.
It just runs normal and all the info is restored.
I cannot say for sure which models and years. However, I do know that the computer management system was already in place on '93 Volvos.
I have disconnected my battery many times. I never noticed any significant change in driving/running condition of the car. Some people have reported problems though.
I'm currently trying to get my Mitchell CD installed on my computer. It's not working!
Anyway, do you have your battery disconnected longer than 30 seconds very often? Like I said, this may or may not be a problem.
I wish I could tell you more. I will be researching this issue though. I'll be sure and let you know what I find.

Well since you're home and on the computer while watching the kids, and I am at work and on the computer because I'm waiting for somebody else to do something before I can do what I have to do let me ask this.
You talked about putting water on the valves to see if it leaked through. When I took the head to the machine shop I watched them put a suction type thing over the holes in the head on all cylinders first intake then exhaust. From that they took actual measurements on a meter. There was no significant difference in the reading on cylidner #1 vs. the other cylinders. Of course none of this is with the cam in place, it's just the head. So if the valves are closing all the way when the cam is off, but seems to be losing compression when the head is assembled, wouldn't that lead one to believe it's something holding the valve open? Then the quesiton is why is it always fine when I push on the gas? I mean this car can feel like it's ready to stall out and quit running, but when I push on the gas pedal it smooths right out and takes off every time. When I let off the gas sometimes it's still smooth and sometimes it's still rough.
Up until I had it in the shop this last time I really thought my low compression was from the rings, but since they said the wet test shows that it's in the head I am more confused.

Ok I guess the next step will be the lifters. There might be a Intermit. problem with one or more of them.
Now you have my Blessing to replace them!! LOL
That is where I would go from this point.

You won't belive this, but I have an order on hold at the dealer just waiting for you to say that. I'm calling them right now to process the order. Really. It's a lot less work and not very expensive. Let's just assume it won't work though, Maybe I can be pleasantly surprised this time. They have to order the lifters, so it will be a while before I get around to putting them in.
Sounds good I will be waiting to hear back from you on this issue.
I will be doing my own work this weekend. Clutch on the Stang The Freeze out plug behind the engine mount and both door handles.
And while in the middle of that going and getting TAXES done.

I did my taxes last weekend. I use Turbo Tax and have for the past 15 years or so. Well I didn't get confirmation that it was accepted with e-filing and my home computer went down and will barely work. I got it up just enough to find out it wasn't accepted because I typed my wife's SSN wrong, so I fixed that and the computer crashed again. I got the computer to work enough to find out the Fed had been accepted, but not the state. Hopefully I can get the computer to work good enough to tell if the state was accepted. I have a new DELL on order, but it will not be in before the end of next week.
Got a great deal on a new Dell. Normally $1109 for $629 with a 19" LCD flat panel monitor. Told my son I need a new computer he searched the Dell website, found this great deal and I bought it. You have to know how to find the deals on the Dell website. If you just go there and buy what you find on the first page you will pay quite a bit more. He found a 40% discount coupon on certain computer that was only good for a limited amount of time. Told me it might take a couple days to find the deal, but it came up that same day.

I just got the new lifters and I have a quesiton. The last time I had to have the machine shop bleed the old ones because we thought that might be the problem. They were real squishy when I got them back. The new ones seem to be very hard like they are already full of oil. If they are already pumped up wouldn't that just be the same as the ones I have? They are brand new in little plastic containers and covered with oil.
