Leaking Coolant

Default Leaking Coolant

Well, I am leaking a considerable amount of coolant on the driver's side. It appears to be dripping off the bottom of my transmission. I know there's four spots that can leak coolant back there; the turbo coolant return line, the two heater core coolant lines, and the coolant line to the radiator. All the lines appear to be dry, I just replaced the turbo coolant line with OEM and I replaced the line to the radiator with SAMCO. The bottoms of the firewall lines are dry.

Is it possible for the turbo the leak coolant? After the swap, my turbo is definitely toast. I have oil dripping off the bottom of the compressor housing and the intercooler hose coupling is saturated with oil. Is there any other place that it can be leaking from?

And the main symptom is that it only appears to be leaking on cool down after I drive it. When my Dad and I took it for a drive last weekend there was a puddle under my car when we were pulling out, when we got back, parked it, and checked underneath and no drips, couldn't even see where it was leaking from. Waited about 45 mins and still no leak, but after sitting for another hour or so there was a small puddle, but all the lines were dry.

Any suggestions?

Check where the hose attaches to the block just under the hood. Recheck all the clamps on all the hoses.
I have not see a turbo leak coolant as of yet. Does not mean it cannot happen.

If you were closer I would have met up with you and pressurized the system to check for the leak.

Yeah, tomorrow I'm going to remove the turbo and I think I'm going to order new heater core coolant lines since they're the only ones that aren't new. Those are the only spots back there that have any coolant, so I don't know what else it would be.

As for the turbo, I think I'm going to have to put my 19T on early. I'm going to order a wideband for it and I'll have to install the EBC for sure.

will do, just spending money on some stuff I didn't want to have to buy until later. I thought about buying a 15G to hold me over for a while, but it doesn't make sense to spend the 150-200 on another turbo when I already have one.

I agree I need to get another turbo soon as well. I keep smelling oil when I get out of the car from driving. It is coming out of the exhaust!

My exhaust does smell oily at times and without having a cat makes it that much worse. But it's mostly that my intercooler coupler is soaked with oil, it's even made its way onto the hose clamp, and it's dripping off of the cold side compressor housing and all of the fittings are tight, so it's gotta be the seals.

Did you check for shaft play when you had it out?

Yeah, it had a bit of shaft play, but I didn't think it was that bad. HOWEVER, the thing is that my car was running super lean. My cylinder one runner on the exhaust manifold was completely white, and the exhaust housing on the turbo was completely white. That turbo was ran extremely hot for a while. I think that just toasted it and wore the seals, not to mention it has 215k miles on it.

Yeah, the seals in it are toast. I pulled off the intercooler piping and the intake pipe and the cold side is just a puddle of oil. So, this weekend I'll be dropping in the 19T as well as my EBC, AEM Uego Wideband, and the Sconeman (from volvospeed) intake pipe, as well as new heater core coolant lines. I think that's where the leak is coming from, it's wet right under those lines and they feel pretty spongy as well. A lot of money right there that I did not want to spend for a long time yet.

Yeah, it's frustrating. I'll tell yah though, I'm going to have one solid car here when I'm done. Keeping my fingers crossed that this transmission thing is just my timing like everyone keeps telling me and not something else.
