Default "light out" indicator lamp on

Altrite, so on my 97 850 my 'light out' indicator lamp stays on all the time. My trunk struts are bad, so if you dont close the trunk slowly it SLAMS shut. When i first got the car, i let the trunk slam...the indicator lamp came on, but i would open and shut the trunk again and it would turn off. After that, i have been the only one to shut my trunk because everyone else lets it slam. Well the other day my friend let the trunk slam, and ever since then the lamp has been on. I checked all the lights, turn signals, brake lights w/ my mom... and nothing is out, however the light out indicator lamp is still on. Does anybody know why this would be on? Itried shutting the trunk a few times and messing with the plastic thing on the left trunk strut(which would usually work) but nothing has worked. any help is appreciated. Thanks, weston.

sounds as though something got pulled or cut and is not drawing enough amps to keep the light off. wait for a second opinion, but i think its time to rip it apart (i would start at the lights them self's.

on the same note, get new truck struts. ;p

just thought of it now. what would ever happen if the light out light burnt out?

you would just have to wait for a "friendly" police officer to pull you over and let you know.

When I test drove my wagon, the light out was on,,so I backed up to a glass front store and checked,,turned out to be a brake light,,,it could be your license plate light, or maybe your trunk light is on when its closed,,dont know, I dont have a trunk, but it could be any light on the car and just happen to work when the trunk is slammed...Rog

not all of the lights throw the light on... things like the trunk light wont throw it on. but an lic plate light might. at least in my 94 they the light wont come on for a trunk light. i can check and see if a pic plate light will make the light come on.

i didnt even think of the liscense plate light. Ill have to check those. I just didint bother getting trunk struts because i knew the trick of grabbing my trunk before it shut, so i made sure i was always the one to close it haha.

Sorry, i have another question about the indicator lamps. I didnt want to make a whole other thread. Only when making left turns when im moving my oil pressure low lamp comes on for a spit second in mid turn then turns off. It is only in sharper left turns and doesnt happen if i stop at a stop sign and then turn left...wierd. I checked my dipstick and my oil wasnt really low. I just changed it in early april and have no leakage(just tranny fluid a lil bit). by the way, what is the oil change interval? I always thought it was 3 months/3000-5000 mi. However, my haynes manual says every 10,000.

it sounds as though that is symptoms of low oil. but if your showing fine on the dip stick (assuming your measuring it on level ground). maybe its a low oil pressure issue?

my silver volvo (good condition) i change every 3-5K miles. the burgundy (kinda crapy one) i just change when the valve train starts to click bad haha.

yeah i just noticed my engine started clicking a couple weeks ago but i read a thread and someone said valve tapping is normal and said to change the oil but i didnt think i would since i changed it in april. I'll just change my oil now since its been probably 3000 miles(odo. broke). I used valvoline high milage last time but i read synthetic is recomended for turbo engines. what would you recoment for the low pressure turbo?

My owners manual for 96 850 recommends oil change:
hard driving conditions every 5K
light driving conditions every 10K for n/a and 5K for turbo
For turbo use 5.6Us qts
I use 10w/30 castrol syntec in both Volvos. But if your car is high millage it may be to late to switch to synthetic (could develop leeks) some people say. I started using synthetic around 50K on both Volvos.

I just solved the mystery of the bulb out light illuminated(in my case) with the help of rspi...heres the post in another forum
Kudos to RSPI he was dead on and I almost dismissed his logic after examining the bulbs initially. I checked the easy one first (right side) verified it had 2 filaments and looked at the bulb number (1157) Then after removing the spare tire in 100 degree heat I pulled the bulb, saw 2 filaments and assumed it was an 1157 (damned if it didnt look exactly like the right bulb!) So off I went chasing fuses relays and switches only to keep hearing RSPI's words in my ear;" its the bulb" So off I go to the parts store just to put the bulb theory to rest and damned if I didnt remove a German Flusser 12v P21/5w bulb from the left side! At that point I knew RSPI was right and I was a fool for not listening. Reassembled all, tested system , all functions normal. thanks again rspi I will listen next time

Not sure.
If you read label, they claim it protects engine better than regular oil. They must have added some additive to it.
I think those additives should help your engine not hurt.( but who am I to say) Any new oil is better than old.

yeah, but all the external lights arent out, and the light only comes on when i slam the trunk, but i know all the tricks to my car so i never let the trunk slam. My friend didnt know the trick, so since then my indicator lamp has been on. I feel like its a bad connection or something is the wires running down the trunk strut.

haha yeah, no girlfriend now so i'll have time to work on my car. I'm gonna take a day to do a suspension tune up and find out where my transmissin leak is coming from. But the trunk job shouldnt take long at all.
