Default Looking to buy another Turbo Wagon/Sedan

Im just recently bought a 98 v70 AWD and love it, but it is the wifes car to drive. I find a plethora of excuses as to why I need to drive the car. But I'm looking to get a turbo for myself. One that I can fu*k around with and not have the wife get all pissy.

There is a 94 850 turbo for sale near my house with 220K for cheap money. I looks like it needs work to pass inspection. The only thing that I'm worried about is the automatic transmission. Are the trannys really as bad as they say they are? I have heard not to get a 94 automatic because they have a weak transmission, how true is this? Is there anything else I should look for on this car?

I like the newer body style of the 97-00 but would like to stay pre-ford. What year had the best turbo vehicle? What is the best year for tuning and upgrading?

Thanks to anyone that can help me

94-97 are pretty much the same car. I have had every year except a 96 and see very little difference. I think I would stay away from one with 220K on the clock though, unless you feel like doing some major work. If the car was very well taken care of, I would not be that concerned cause 220 is reasonable, but my 94 engine went at 206K for some reason and I just sold the car and got the 97 I have now. Just my opinion.
