Question Loud noise under car!!!!

Ok, I have a 96 850 GLT and the other day I was driving and I heard a noise as if I ran over a tree branch that sounded like it hit against the cars under carriage. I didn't pay no mind to it, then about a mile or two I heard it again. Today my wife said she heard it a lot more than usual. I don't even know where to start looking. It sounds like it is coming from the middle or the right rear passenger side of car. Any advice would help. Thanks

Did you check under the car for anything unusual?

Not yet but my wife got stuck with it. The rear passenger wheel froze up and when I got there I put it in reverse and it freed it up, but now it makes an awful high pitch screaming noise as if metal on metal rubbing. Any ideas as to what it might be. My ABS/TRACS light is on didn't know if that has anything to do with it. Brake pads seem to be in place and nothing seems out of the ordinary.

Maybe the E-brake shoe pads came loose. You would need to remove the rotor to check that though.

+1, do a thorough visual check. Try to move components by hand to see if anything is loose.

If you do not feel safe doing this yourself, have it looked at by a reputable shop's ASE Master Technician.

Thanks guys for all your help, I didn't even have to take it apart and I noticed that the e-brake shoes must have come loose and they actually cracked the the drum part of the rotor cause you can see it through the wheel. Will work on it today. Do you think it is possible the brake cable froze? and what are the chances it wont happen again

Usually the shoes come loose from the plate. I little more common on the RWD cars but have seen it on the FWD cars as well.

that was the problem, e-brake adjuster broke and caused wheel to lock. i only need to replace springs and adjusters as the shoes are in good shape. Only question is does anyone have a pic of how the assembly goes together as mine was not in one piece. i am a diy-er so doing it myself is no problem, just need some help. and i also have to put a new e-brake cable in cause that got bent where it locks into the bottom adjuster.

I do not have any pictures handy if all else fails pull the other side apart and see how that side goes.
