Loud noise in rain/snow from '02 XC
Hey everyone I'm here posting for my uncle who has a 2002 XC. It's got about 35K on it right now. There's a loud noise during heavy rain/snow that he seems to think is from the transmission. It also affects the way it drives. I suggested maybe a wet belt but he doesn't think so. I looked through a few searches and found a few people had transmission problems. Is this a reoccurring thing with these cars or more an isolated incident? Thanks for any help.
It doesn't make sense that there is only a problem in the rain with the transmission.
Does he have any other symptoms? Any lights come on? Power steering problems?

Nope, no lights and no steering issues. He said the sound is like a metal on metal type whine and only happens in heavy rain or snow. He thinks maybe it's due to water getting in the AWD transfer case or something like that. We were just wondering if anyone else had a problem like this. Similar symptoms in other threads I read in a search led me to initially assume transmission as that's what turned out to be the problem in their case. Not so sure though.
this is what i would do take your car and jack up one side high enough so u can slide under it and look at the middle section of your exhaust and your awd propeller shaft and if you see signs of metal touching metal then theres your noise, when its very wet the metal expands and since its close to the exhaust it becomes worped. theres a service bulletin or tech-note on this problem the fix is a new bracket. any problems email me thanks...........
Thanks for your help. We think it's more like a transmission noise and/or slip. It seems to only happen in the weather conditions and is fine dry. Does that sound like anything anyone has heard of?
