Question Metal Shavings on the Drivers Side Floor Mat???

Howdy All,

So I just purchased a 96 850 wagon. Its the summer time so I've been wearing my flip flops which I take off when I drive (yes, driving bare foot in Ohio is slightly illegal... whatever) and through this I have noticed metal shavings on the carpet poking my feet. When I first got the car I cleaned the ever loving hell out of it (soccer mom was the previous owner. piles of candy and stuff under the seats. uggggg) and there were no shavings. I felt inside the plastic cover under the front drivers dash and there were no shavings in there, and from what I could see there is no ware on any of the parts. So, anyone experience this or know where the shavings may be coming from? They are small, curled, and on the front half of the floor mat.

Thanks.

Does this keep happening evertime you clean up the old shavings or was it just a one time thing?

Well I cleaned it on Saturday (I picked it up on Friday and made it Legal on Monday) and I just noticed it yesterday. I picked up what I though was most of them last night, but it was kind of dark and I found a couple this morning. I checked out as much of the steering column as I could visually and by touch and there doesn't seem to be any ware or grinding of the sort. Its clean now and I'll be keeping an eye on it.

I'm sure if it was the steering column, you would hear a horrific grinding sound and felt some resistance if it was chewing itself apart.

Since you just bought the car from another user I would assume the shavings were already there for some reason and are shaking out over time.

After a close inspection by my self and an equally (un) knowledgeable friend, I have come to the conclusion that this is all just a case of NPS (new parent syndrome... every cough that baby makes must be the plague) and the metal shavings must have come from the floor at work. I'm a software tester, but I work for a small company so sometimes I'm filler. About 5 months ago I had to drill some holes in a bunch of metal project boxes to fit in our kiosks and I'm guessing (though I've felt around on the floor by my desk and can't really find any shavings... we do have a cleaning crew.) thats maybe where they came from... I haven't found any new ones and there is no god awful noises from the steering column soooo ja, false alarm.... maybe. Obviously I'm still going to keep an eye on it.
