Default Metal to Metal sound in back of Engine

I have friend who drives I'd guess an 850 wagon (unsure of the year, but 90's), it is a turbo 5 banger white block. He asked me today to help him out and I was stumped. He stated his car is making a grinding noise that sounded metal to metal and started quite suddenly. He stated it is at the rear of the engine (I had suggested both tensioners, and he replied they were both replaced at the last TB change). I don't know of anything at the rear of the engine that would do this (automatic that is shifting perfectly). I could only suggest the turbo (he doesn't think so), and perhaps the starter somehow not retracting enough to grind a little. He claims the car has started to burn oil (I'm thinking a venting system issue, but I'm also thinking "turbo"). Here's the part that threw me: Claims he was a quart and a half low, so added oil and the noise quit (but he only ran for less than a minute). When he restarted, the noise was back. I think this is "coincidental" and is the turbo. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am posting on multiple forums as he is without a car (afraid to drive it), and desperate for a solution, or knowledge he can drive as is for now.

I would think maybe starter is hanging up. But hard to say without hearing it.

Thanks Tech, I think you are on a good track, and I'll forward your suggestion to take a good look at the starter!

Hopefully it has not damaged the flywheel if it is the starter causing it.

He quit driving it pretty quick when the noise started. I'll remind him to check the condition of the flywheel when he pulls the starter, That was a nice reminder to do just that, THANKS!

Default Fixed!

Tech, I just wanted to follow up and report back that your suggestion of the bendix as being the issue was RIGHT ON! A replaced started has resolved the issue.

THANK YOU!
