My crazy Volvo weekend
So... Weekend started out like a normal one. We've been looking for a car for my wife, as the Jetta is getting a little long in the tooth. I generally get cars that are in need of some help, but not really far gone. Anyhow, we ended up finding something on Friday: a 2002 XC70 in need of some relatively minor bodywork. So why am I posting this in the 850 forum? Well... later on that evening, I was going to help a friend who was having car trouble down the road from my house. Because of where she was, I went a street over from mine- a direction I usually don't go- to get down to the main road. As I headed down the road, I saw a guy standing next to a '96 850 NA, talking on the phone. The car had a for sale sign in the window, with an asking price of $450. Now, I have a '94 850 that I had been working on as a project. It was intended to go to a friend- actually, the same one I was going to help out- who is in serious need of a car (the one she's using isn't her own) I didn't have time to work on the 850 this winter, so it sat around in the driveway. When I looked in it this spring, planning to start on it again... apparently, there is a serious water leak somewhere, and there was an inch of water on the floor, and the interior is full of mold. There's no fixing this one. It has 250,000 miles on it, and the engine is half taken apart. Combine that with the mold, which would require a total strip of the interior to fix, and it's just not happening It's a parts car now. So, after that discovery, I decided to watch for another 850 that needs work, that I can use the parts from the 94 on. This brings us to the 850 I saw on the street last night. I parked my car, and went over to it. The guy on the phone was the owner. He told me he had just posted it on Craigslist 2 hours before, and had gotten 17 emails and 10 phone calls, including the guy he was talking to then. Obviously, the car has issues, all mechanical, but the body is almost perfect. 169,000 miles, and the odometer DOES work. I gave him a deposit, told him to hold the car for a bit, and ran and got the rest. Drove the 850 home. It needs suspension work, brakes, some engine work... but I have most of the suspension stuff new that I had gotten for the '94, as well as a new timing belt. The rest of what it needs is in good shape on the '94. I'll post pics of the car later! I bought 2 project car Volvos this weekend, and my wife is actually fine with this! And I'll have some other parts from the '94 to sell when I'm done.
