My drivers seat won't return to it's upright position!!
I have a 95 850 Volvo. The drivers seat back will not come up to an upright position. When I pull the lever, the motor is working, but the back is not moving either forwards or backwards. Does anyone else have this problem and how do I fix OR the bigger ?? How much does it cost to fix?

Welcome to the forum.
>Sore back!
Sorry about he problem, it must be a pain.
A little while ago someone else had the same problem and in his case I believe it was the cable that was dislodged from the motor or the cable simply broke or something like that. The top-dog of this forum, named Moderator Tech, is on vacation now and Tech knows exactly what to do with this problem. I can only provide you with motor locations but not sure if it would do any good. Also, wait till other members reply; there are quite a few experts in the 850 forum and I believe one of them has the exact answer you need.
I hope someone else replies soon with a solution. Until then, you could put a pillow on the seat back, or have someone in your family do a massage every day.

RE: My drivers seat won't return to it's upright position!!
There's a bar going across the seat right on the bottom of the vertical piece (sorry lack of words). First you need to remove the metalic stiches from the leather to get access inside the foam and then with a pair of pliers or vice grips, rotate this bar to the desired seat position.

RE: My drivers seat won't return to it's upright position!!
Thank you everyone for the advice and insight. I did some research and found out this is a common problem with these seats. The motor works as it will continually humm as I "try" to make it recline (it is already there) and when I pull the lever up to have the seat come up...it makes a short grunt sound and then stop. So something is jammed or "not connecting".
I agree with all of you that it is probably the cable. I have figured out though that if you adjust the "bottom" seat you can basically get the back to move more in an upright position and therefore not look like you are trying to drive lying down! [8D]
The big question and I will wait till I hear from those who have really dealt and fixed this is.....#1..how do you take the leather off the seats without ruining them. #2...do you have to be a good mechanic to fix this or can anyone who knows how to handle tools be able to do this? AND last but not least #3...if I need a professional do this...any suggestions as to whom to trust and how much or the average cost to have it repaired??
JPN....thanks or the pic I did email it to myself for future reference!! And yes....I have a HUGE pillow to put behind me. One can only drive so long holding on to the steering wheel for dear life and look like your not in pain!!

RE: My drivers seat won't return to it's upright position!!
Hi TM,
I'm glad others have contributed too.
As to your questions:
1) Not exactly sure, as I never had to dig into it. But you could investigate the seat assembly to locate attachments, etc... Note, that the 850's seats have SIPS (side airbag) so you may want to disconnect the negative battery cable, though you would have to reset the radio and make the engine re-learn correct idle. Someone else may have done it so wait if you can.
2) No, I don't believe you have to be an expert to fix this, as long as you have a basic set of tools (metric sockets, wrenches, pliers, etc...). Again, Moderator Tech could save you in a few sentences but Tech is on vacation now.
3) I would definitely avoid generic or franchise shops whenever servicing a Volvo (I wouldn't even let them change oil). If you don't like to get taken at a dealer, I would suggest that you locate a shop that specialises in Swedish/European makes. But if there is a conscientious Volvo dealer near you, that's where I would go to and get an estimate.
I hope this helps. Hear other members' suggestions as well.
