Mystery severed hose...PLEASE HELP!
1997, 850 GLT Turbo, 178,000 miles, 5-cyl, 2.4L Mystery severed hose
I’ve had a “gross evap leak” for the past 4 months. Brought it to the best mechanics in the area…can’t find the problem.
I poked my little head under the front drivers wheel (more toward the front of the nose) and tucked behind the plastic skirt I found two hoses, one was severed (which looks like a hose for the windshield washing fluid…but stiffer and not pliable).
I turned on the car, let if run for a bit I realized there was a “spurting” air sound….pulled on the hose, it broke…sound disappeared.
What should I do? This piece I have in my hand is about 2 feet long with a 50 degree bend.
Any clue as to what it was used for...maybe the vaccume system?

Can you post a pic?
The charcoal canister it is the area you were looking thats where it needs to be connected to.
One comes off the valve under the hood on the cooling fan.
The other runs to the gas tank.

And in case if you cannot post a pic, do your best and trace the lines to see where they are\were connected to (and mark it on the pics I provide). Could you also describe the approx diameter of the thing? I'll attach some illustrations to see if any of them has the hose/pipe/tube you broke off

If the hose was the vent/vapor return line to the gas tank (which as Tech pointed out is in the area you described) then that would explian the EVAP leak problem
You guys are amazing!! Thank you so much for the speedy responses! In fact you were all correct! It was the two return lines...got my hands dirty and replaced the one that connects to the charcoal canister. I haven't taken her for a test drive, but she sure sounds a whole lot better!
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
JPN-
Thanks for the illustrations...Just so you know, the original tubeI found severed, than broke off was under the car, under the black engine protective skirt. After looking at the car in some light (and with Tech's help) I found the little charcoal canister...with nothing attached (hence where I broke off the tube). The origional tube isn't any larger (in diameter) than a windshield wiper hose, but much more stiff.
I've attached a photo with an arrow showing the black hole where I put in hand down and attachedthe new hose. The other end of the new hose attached to the origional hose under the black engine protective skirt near the front drivers tire.
I hope this helps. Again, thank you for your help and the illustrations.

I like it when a problem gets solved, and also when the original poster takes the time to let everyone know the issue is solved. As everyone else has said.....Glad it works now!
