New 95 volvo turbo
Hey,
I just joined this forum because I bought a 95 volvo turbo yesterday w/ 124k miles. I'm pretty active over at ToyotaNation.com (but it's slowed down lately) so I know next to nothing about volvos except that they are safe.
My question for you guys is, is there anything I need to get replaced or checked?
I also am wondernig if 124k is too high milage to switch to synthetic (I got 5 quarts in my garage that need to be used lol). I switched my moms camry to Synthetic and the car seems to have started to shown some signs of problems, although I don't know if it's connected w/ the switch to synthetic.
Also, is the engine non interference?
Thanks,
-Jimmy
PS. Is this the foremost 850 forum, or is there another site?
Edit: I'll get pics asap. The car is still on the dealers lot. Imma pick it up tomorrow/saturday.

I would check the vaccum lines, Turbo hoses, RMS (Rear Main Seal), Turbo for shaft play, Have the suspension looked over as well.
What is this "Engine Non Interference" you are talking about?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you need to replace your vaccum lines get the kit from StylinMotors INC. Also if your turbo hoses need replaced get them from Stylin Motors INC. They are better then OEM (Stock) lines and hoses. Or you can get SAMCO turbo hoses from Viva Performance.

Ok. Different question. If I snap my timing belt, can I just replace the belt or do I have to do a rebuild?
"There are two types of engines that use timing belts. They are described as: "Interference Engines" and "Non-interference Engines" The difference lies in the proximity between the valves and the pistons. On an interference engine, if the timing belt slips even one notch, the piston can crash into an open valve causing serious engine damage by bending valves and breaking pistons. Non-interference engines will usually not self destruct, but in either case if the belt fails, the engine will immediately shut down leaving you stranded. The link at the bottom of this article will tell you which category your engine falls under."

RE: New 95 volvo turbo
Both Volvo 850 engines (2.3L VIN 57 & 58 and 2.4L VIN 55 & 56) are interference engines. I have heard of damage not only to the cylinder head and valves -- but also to piston tops.
Replacing your timing belt (possibly tensioner too) must be done every 70K miles.
Model Year 1994-96 Volvo 850 Turbo has the same engine (with high pressure turbo - 10.5 psi) as the 1997 Volvo 850-T5 and 1998 Volvo S70-T5 as you are familar with.

Depending upon whether water pump and/or tensioner is replaced...
About 400-500 USD at the dealership -- at least that is what my dealership quoted me.
If you plan to do this yourself, consider purchasing Slater's Cam Degree Tool -- to get the most power out of your dual intake/exhaust cams.

Inspect the Belt closely for Glazing and Cracks in the Belt.

Not many Pics though they must have taken them off.

Cool. Glad you found it as it's different than most cars.

On the Online diagram, what you do next it something by the grill. It had a large diagonal piece (what I now realize is part of the logo) which I though was something behind the grill which you had to pull. After reaching around the back for a while and rechecking the online manaul, I found out it's a little pulley that you pull which pops out of the grill. LOL.
So much harder now that it's a "luxury" car. Hahaha.
