Default new car

I just bought a 94 850 Turbo and have a few questions. First of all the check engine light came on and I have noticed a smell of sulfur, from what I can tell it maybe the 02 sensor and I was wondering who much that might run. Also the shift up light came up blinking for a while and then turned itself off. I have noticed a lumpy idle after the car has run for a while and it is in Drive. Could it be a huge transmission problem? Any answers would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Volvo Club!

Since you have a '94 there is a ton of diagnostic stuff that you can do without a code reader. You need to buy a Haynes manual for the car, I have always had to special order them fromAdvance Auto parts but they get there within 1 day. Don't even waste your money on a Chilton's manual. As bad astheHaynes manualis it comes in handy onsome repairs. The perfect companion is the Volvo factory service manual. This link is for a '95 model but all is the same as your '94. It can be lifted for free here:

http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/dow.../Volvo_850.zip

Once you download the manual, unzip it and see the file named tests with codes turbo.pdf.

You have a complete diagnostic system built into your car for everything from the engine to the seats built in under the hood. The above referenced file will tell you how to read and clear the codes from your engine (socket A-2).

Read your codes and post them back, chances are we can tell you what the car is unhappy about - the manual will tell you a great deal as well.

Particularly on turbo models it often comes back top a bad vacuum line which is quick and easy to fix.

Best of luck,

...Lee

+1 to above. First step...read the codes. Then clear them and see what ones (if any) come back. That will get you started. Please keep us posted.

When I took the car to get a diagnostic i received these codes PO730 gear ratio incorrect, p1310, and po133 which is the o2 sensor I believe. I was wondering if you guys could help me out.

The "Incorrect Gear Ratio" may or may not be serious. I once had it and was traced to low transmission fluid level, as little as a half quart. After added a half quart of Dexron-III/Mercon the code never came back. This code can also trigger CEL.
