Default New Key 850

Hi, I'm new to the forums here so I'll try to keep this short.
I just got my first car, a 1996 Volvo 850 turbo.
The car only came with one key so I was wondering if it was possible to
get one of the switchblade keys off ebay, have it cut for the car and have
the attached remote programmed for it?
Someone mentioned taking a chip out of the old remote and putting it into
the new switchblade key.

Thanks!

probably not going to happen. The only place that is gonna cut a key for you is the dealership, and they will most likely only cut the keys they sell.

Okay, the keys they sell are going to be way too expensive. The keys for a 96 don't have a chip do they? I need a second key for the car and I don't want to go to the dealership.

ok, here,s the thing i found, in Ohio i must take the key to the dealer, no one else will even touch a volvo key, the cost here is 65 dollars, they also need to see your drivers lic and the title to the car as well as the VIN. not sure where your from but this is how they want it done in Columbus!!! i was disappointed too when i found this out but that happens, and i have to drive 2 1/2 hours to columbus as well

and the key is laser cut, so they do not do it right at the dealer anyway, in addition to the key cost there is a shipping fee and they send the key to your house, good luck, hope your situation is different!!

I had a locksmith cut one for my 96 NA in RI. $25 watched him cut it right in front of me, no laser was used and it didn't take any longer than any other key.

I stand corrected folks, i was wrong and i,ll admit it. just called our local locksmith and they DO order in those keys, wonderful news, i called them sometime ago and they wanted nothing to do with the key, i guess it depends on who wants to help the customer. Thanks, all. now i do not not have to go out of the way for a key!!
