So I just got my first volvo, a black 1995 850 turbo. I have about 3500 bucks to put into it, but I don't know where to go or what to do first. Any suggestions?? I don't know much yet, but I'm ready to learn

Clean the flame trap, change the oil, check the spark plugs, etc.

Check the engine mounts and the C/V boots.
Also check all the breaks and Belts.
Make sure the timing belt has been done when it was supposed to if not then do it fast.

Tech, you mention the timing belt. Mine was done about 5 or 6 years ago and about 70k ago.
So its due for one.
Couple of questions about it.
Is the engine an interferance engine?

I looked at replacement procedure for it, is it a DIY kind of job or am I bound to get into trouble doing it?
What is the going rate for a t belt replacement?

Yes it is an interferance engine.
If you have done any work like this before you should not have any problems.
As long as you make sure the timing marks are lined up before and after you should be fine.
I would also suggest to replace the hydrolic tensioner. They should be replaced at the second intervial.
Here is a link to replacing the belt.Im not sure if it is the same one as you looked at.

I'm not sure but I think the charge is about $300 for the timing belt replacement that I just had done on my V70. My 850 is due in about 10K miles. After reading that, I'm certain that I will pay somebody else to do it. I'm just not that mechanical. My daughter is marrying a mechanic that is getting out of the Army next week. Maybe I can get him to do it.
