Default NO Heat from vents!

I just purchased this 95 850 turbo wagon with climate control and don't know why I never checked the heat! I guess since it's warm outside and I have never had a vehicle with heat problems I didn't think about checking it.

Anyway, I turned the heat up all the way on the driver and passenger side and I smelled a faint sweet coolant smell for a short period. The engine was warm, I'd been driving at least half an hour and my temp needle stays at 3oclock but only outside air came through the vents. I have not noticed any moisture in the car although for the first time yesterday I moved the car from the front of the house to my garage, when I jacked up the car just to take a look underneath I noticed a slow drip of coolant starting to drip off the rear-ish center off the tranny close to the firewall side but I couldn't locate where it was originating from. I wiped off as much as I could, drove tha car a while then parked back out front of the house----I checked several times later and NO LEAKS under the car! What the heck?? The car purrrrrs and runs great. Any Ideas??? Could it still be the heater core?

Default RE: NO Heat from vents!

Greetings,

Sorry about the mysterious problem, as well as delayed reply (just came back from an 11-daytrip and trying to catch up).

On a rare occasion, coolant leaks seem to appear only under certain conditions but mostly when the system is at the max pressure. The best way to check for a leak is to use a pressure-tester but if unavailable, let the car idle for 20 minutes or so; this puts much stress on the cooling system. Is the coolant level in the reservoir dropping? If so, how fast?

The leak may be either of the following, assuming from your description:
1. Heater hose to heater core connections (at the firewall)
2. Lower radiator hose connection

The lower radiator hose on 850 is long and is under many hoses/wires, and the engine-end is somewhere close to the transmission, so check that area to see any leak.

Let us know your findings if you would.

Have you tried messing w/ the air mix?

If you put it all air, you're going to get only outside air...
