Odomete etc trouble 850 T5
Hi Guys,
I have a 1997 Volvo 850 T5, it has a few sticky electronic issues with the central locking, alarm not working, fuel flap not opening, and odometer and display lights not working. Ive had it serviced by our local mechanic but would like to get the service light reset as well -(something he can't do by the sounds)..
The odometer and trip meter both don't work, am i better to pull the dash apart first, I've read about quite a few people replacing gears..?
The car is actually my parents and i was thinking of buying it off them, but if it was going to cost a fortune to fix this kinda stuff i may not!
Iv been trawling through the info on here, Im just wondering if a few of these things are related? obviously alarm and central locking would be..
many thanks
justin

The odometer and display lighs not working is usually one of two things, either the globes are blown, or if all of the panel lights are not working, most likely it will need a new instrument dimmer switch, which is very simple to replace.
The odometer and trip meter gears are the same, and the gears are relatively straight forward to change, however removing the dash pad to gain access to the cluster can be tricky for a novice, as you have to contend with the passenger side airbag. This is a very common problem with the 850 VDO cluster, and replacing both gears while in there makes good sense.
Central locking alarm and fuel flap issue may be related, as the central locking controls the fuel flap lock. Alarm is tied into the central locking as well. Check fuses first.
You may find that there is only a few key issues with the car, which leads to other items not working.
Read the DIY section, as a lot of the fixes are laid out in there.
Oh and welcome!
