Default Oil Change/Leak Question...

So I tried to change my oil tonight....And:

-The turbo is leaking. I knew it was, but it's coming from the drivers side of the turbo, so if you're under the car, it's the left side of the turbo. Everything under there is pretty much covered in dirt/oil. I'll try to get pics ASAP, but is this most likely my turbo leaking or a hose somewhere? And if it's a hose, how hard is it to change a hose?

-Never take off a filter w/ the engine block undrained. I made that stupid mistake today...

-How do I take the nut off the engine block? It's tight as hell, and I can't seem to get it off...If I wait until the morning for the engine block to cool, would that solve my problem and get this thing off? It's rediculously tight, or I'm just rediculously weak....

-My oil is black as dirt. My last oil change was 2000-3000 miles. How the heck does my oil get so black, in such a short period of time? Am I burning something or what?

And the oil I was using was Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w-30...

Edit: The triangular brackets are acceptable jacking points correct?

Hi Jimmy,

As to the oil leak under the turbocharger, it is considered normal as long as it is not dripping. A dealer technician told me that it is normal to have minor seepage of oil there, and there is not much they can do. But if it's dripping, then you may want to check the oil return tube gasket. Replacing the gasket there is a piece of cake, but if you do you may want to have the other end's seal ring handy too. If it still drips, it may be the turbine/compressor sealthat is leaking.

Not to worry, we ALL do that type of stuff once/while.

As to the drain bolt, try a breaker bar & 6-point socket. I usually use 3/8" drive breaker bar, but if this doesn't do, try 1/2" bar. Also, you may want to replace the metal gasket, if the bolt is there so tight. FCP Groton also sells magnetic chip detector-type drain bolt, which I used.

In general, you cannot judge the condition of engine oil by its colour; it gets black after 1,000-2,000 miles or so. If you used synthetic, it probably has cleaned out all the sludge in the engine. Make sure not to overfill.

I usually use the subframe for jackstands but the triangular stuff is ok too.

^How do I identify the subframe?

I looked at some of those pictures from VS, but I can't really tell where I'm supposed to go. When I get under the car, there isn't really a noticable frame either...

Edit: The leak is enough that I get a small puddle every day (about the size of a quarter). Also, when I took off the filler cap, it smelt slightly burnt.

See attached pic, I circled the subframe in "Red" for you. Subframe is the supporting structure that holds the engine, gearbox, etc... It is sometimes used on the rear as well, and are also referred to as "support/crossmember". You'll know when you see it; it's surrounding the engine & gearboxand suspension lower control arms are attached to it. When you lift the front end with a floor jack, make sure to use a piece of wood between the jack pad & the frame to avoid damage.

Your turbo may need an overhaulso have the seals replaced. If you take this route, I would take it apart, clean everything and replace the bearings as well, or simply switch with a rebuilt unit. Before doing this, try disconnecting air ducts and do a good visual inspection to locate where exactly the leak is from.
