Ordered my oil test kit today
I'm going to have my oil tested @ Blackstone labs. Some guy at the jy told me that he got his VW TDI oil tested for free but has not given me the info yet. I kept about 14 oz of oil from my last change. I drove about 5,200 miles on the oil but did have to add 2 quarts. 10W-30 during the winter months.

I understand why you have oil analyzed, are you looking for a specific result? Or are you just curious?
My Dad has worked with large engines all his life. He told me that oil never 'wears out', just the additives do. He told me about working somewhere once where they analyzed the oil in industrial equipment frequently, and just added whatever additives were worn out. Of course, these were engines that used hundreds of gallons of oil....

I'm more interested in knowing if I could extend oil changes if I chose to. I doubt I will but it would be nice know.
It wasn't until last night did I learn that the anaylist can tell you that certain parts are wearing out faster than usual. I went to "Bob the oil guy's" website and read a report that he had done.

Have my test kit in today. I'll send it off tomorrow.
There is an on-going debate on Matt's site about what oil one should use. Bla, bla, bla, to me, the purpose to choosing an oil is to get the least amount of wear out of your engine with the oil you use. The best way to figure that out is to put the oil in, then have it tested for engine wear. The analysis is the only way to tell.

Hurrah!!! Finally got my test results e-mailed to me today. This link will tell you how to interpet the report. I have over 225,000 on my motor and these are the results I received.

I'm going to test it one or 2 more times. I switched to 10W-40 and it's no longer loosing oil. I think I'm going to do the next test at 7,500 because I'm currently on a road trip and will not get back home till I have that number of miles on this oil.

I'm back home and guess what was in my mail box... Two test kits from Blackstone. LOL
I'm currently at about 8,000 miles on my oil since the last change and I've only loss 1 quart of oil since switching to 10W-40 for the summer months. I still have not seen any smoke although I do think it did smoke one day as I was stuck in some mountains on my way to Salt Lake City from Vegas. We were going down hill at about 10 mph and the guy behind me started acting strange and slowed way down (if that's possible) to put space between us and he was flashing his lights. I didn't respond and shortly after that traffic picked up and he began acting normal again so maybe it was smoking then and he thought the car was going to explode or something.
Anyway, I'll change oil in the next few days and send another sample to Blackstone to see if 8,000 mile oil changes are ok.
