Pre-purchase questions
Hello all! I have no doubt that these are things that have been asked a thousand times before!
I'm looking at a 1996 850 base with 174k miles and not extremely detailed service information, but two owner car.
It's 200 miles away and I want to have a bit more info before making the drive and possibly purchasing it.
I've read through the exceptionally well written buyers guides in the stickers so my only real questions I've got are these:
1. Abs light on - brakes recently replaced. I've seen the abs module is notorious for having issues with the solder joints, is this a make or break deal for safety/drivability for a short term period until a new moduly can be installed? My other guess is possibly the wheel hub
2. I'm told the CEL is on when you start the car but shuts off after driving for a short period. Any ideas what this could be? (I know, looking for a needle in a needle stack) I currently do not know if it's throwing any DTC for this.
3. They're asking 3100.00us for the vehicle, given these facts, does 2800 seem like a reasonable price given today's car markets?

1. the ABS light can be caused by the controller board, the ABS pump, or a wheel or transmission speed sensor. You'd need to scan for codes using an OBD 2 reader capable of reading ABS codes. You can drive a car without the ABS working - you just don't get the added safety of the system avoiding a lock up in a panic stop. Check out Xemodex or Midwest ABS web sites for how to diagnose and to send your controller in for a repair. If its the pump, you can find a used part via Car-part.com
2. if the CEL comes on, there's a code stored. If the light goes out after a mile, then its probably the service interval reminder light and not the CEL. That said, you may need a special tool to reset the reminder light on a 1996.
3.. $3100 for a NA Volvo with 176K miles and known issues? IMHO, the decimal is in the wrong place. Seems its way over priced. I'd be thinking in the 1000-1500 range. For that price you can get a newer car with nicer features and somthing more than 160 HP.
