Angry Problem after PCV change

Car in question is a 95 850 Turbo 229K. Like the title says, it has an issue after changing out the PCV system. First off I will NEVER do the PCV system again, talk about a major pain in the ...... Took me damn near 14 hours to do it......Sheesh. and to top it all off, I still get a steady stream of light smoke out the dipstick.

Anyway, the car starts and revs fine, but it has a lopey/shaky idle almost like it is missing off an on. RPMS are about 700. No codes at all. It almost sounds as if the idle is hunting a bit. It ran and idled perfectly before I messed with it.

I checked and double checked all electrical and vacuum connections, all the hoses, etc.... and everything is where it is supposed to be, no leaky/split hoses, etc. The vacuum hose to the EGR valve looks a little kinked but not too bad.

Any ideas before I take it in to have someone look at it?

Man, you took a lot of stuff loose when you did that PCV. Which instructions did you use? I usually use two sets of instructions, LakeSide's and Justin's over on Matt's site.

If you pulled the intake off, and the fuel rail, there is a chance that you didn't get all of the injector seals in good or lost one. Also, some people get the clamp on the lower right side of the intake manifold stuck under the manifold edge or loose it all together.

A few questions... Did you connect the vac tube at the thermostat end of the manifold? I'm sure you did or the car would run smooth and you'd get a cel.

Did you look close at the vacuum tree under the throttle body? Some people have cracked that tree before of left a vacuum tube off of it.

Did you knock the idle control valve vacuum hose off the bottom of it? I did that once and it caused the car to run rough and stall.

Other issues include manifold leaks, MAF hose not all the way on, or EGR tube nut not tighten all the way.

Look over these instructions and see if anything stands out:
PCV Replacement

Take a deep breath and get a good night sleep. Maybe tomorrow something will come to you. The first time I did it, it took me 7 hours and 2 trips to the auto parts store for tools and parts. The second time about 5 hours, and the last time about 2-1/2 hours. I've done 4 now.

Some codes take a while to show up in the ECU. If you have a good gauge it may show you PENDING CODES, which may help.

Mine still smoked for about 1,000 miles after I did it. I alway cleaned the manifold ports where the EGR connected and the PTC valve. I like LakeSide's and Justin's instructions because they have a lot of pics.

I used the lakeside instructions. I pulled the intake off, but I left the fuel rail and injectors all connected to the manifold, so no chance the problem is a lost, loose injector o-ring. The clamp is free and clear on the right side of the manifold. The vacuum tree is ok, so is the MAF hose and all other hoses and connections. The only thing I can think of is maybe a manifold leak, but there is no air hiss or anything like that, and I torqued all the bolts down to 15 Ft/lbs.

did you disconnect the battery?

could be possible that you actually fixed a/some vacuum leak(s) and the ECU has not adjusted yet.

There was a small amount of crud but I removed it with a pick and towel.

No I did not disconnect the battery. I wonder if disconnecting it for a while might reset it

Fixed it!! I reset the ECU and also found one of the Vacuum hoses to the boost control valve had popped off. Car idles much better and runs smooth. Looks like it will be ok for awhile longer!

Yep!!

Anyway, we took the car on a 30 mile round trip and just got back. Ran great, no issues and no check engine light, so I think it is good to go.

With that vacuum hose connected and your smooth idle do you still have a little smoke at the dipstick or did that cure that issue too ??

Still has a lite amount of smoke, but nowhere near as bad as before the PCV change, and even less once it started running right again

Some jobs go easier than others. Good to know it's cut down on your smoking and the engine is running well.

Yeah, I'm glad too. After all the "fun" doing the job I would have been majorly PO'd if it hadn't changed anything for the better.
