Default Prospective Volvo buyer

I've been looking at some used volvos to find a wagon for the family. I wasn't sure which model to go with but the 850 is what i'll probably be leaning towards due to it being FWD. The prices seem to vary and the mileage is almost always "high." i've seen issues with climate control functions on more than a few. Is this a common problem and if so, something relatively inexpensive and easy to fix? Look at the ad below, does it seems like a worthy purchase? what do you suppose the problem might be? I'm not very DIY capable but i do get it done with the assistance of my mechanic cousin. I know i will have to get some parts but does it sound like something that may be worth it in the end? Thank you

1996 Volvo 850 wagon- 4 speed automatic, 5 cylinder 2.4 liter engine, all power- seats, windows, power moon roof, heated leather seats, rear wiper. Runs good, body in good to very good condition with minor scratches and dings, Am/Fm radio w/ cassette and front & rear speakers, great sounding system and new battery. Good tires with alloy wheels and extra set of rims provided, large cargo area with cargo liner. Recently failed inspection for emission (visible smoke) and missing lug nut. Heater and AC not working but blower works. Vehicle has approximately 200,000 miles on it, the odometer stopped working at approx. 190,315 miles. Asking $750.00 or b/o

Hey its got a good stereo.

Lug nuts are cheap, fixing a smoke problem from a non-turbo engine is not.

I personally think it's not a good fit for you and will end up causing you more pain than good.

I would not mess with that. What were you looking to spend and where are you located? I know there is a 94 850 turbo for sale in the for sale section. I believe they are asking 2000 or BO for it. It has 196K miles on it. Do a search for Macs&Volvos, I believe it is his car.

yeah, i'm gonna pass on this one. i spoke to the owner and the first thing out of her mouth was "are you a mechanic?" she states that it needs engine work so i'm going to pass on it. I'm outside of NYC (30 min) and am willing to travel for the right buy. I once drove to boston for some rims and then got home and they didn't even fit. so traveling is not a big problem for me.

budget wise, i definitely can't spend more than 2,000 and that's even stretching it right now for me. I'll prob just keep my eyes open and put a few dollars away to increase that budget amount.

i've seen 740's for less that even have service records but i think i'm still leaning towards the 850. thank you for your help.
