Default R door sills - how to polish these things...

I have these metal door sills in my T-5R. I had to install one today and decided to try to polish it before putting it in. Man, I really couldn't get anything less than 1000 grit sand paper to do anything to it. I guess they are stainless steel. They do get beat up over the years, like 17 years to be exact.

I tried steel wool and it was like trying to take a scratch out of glass with news paper. The sand paper got some of the scratches out but I was wondering if there is anything else that could be done to polish these things?

I just used polishing compound and a dremel with a buffing tip to do mine.. Ill take a pic tomorrow..

The only thing it wouldnt remove is the rub marks from that rubber peice on the bottom of the door..

Ya, I was going to say. Any form of sandpaper is going to really dull them up. You need to polish them like MattyXXL said.

(sort of kicking myself for selling mine to Gilber33 years ago)

I have 3 extras. My spare set is only missing the front passenger door sill. So, if you find one I have the other three I'll let go of pretty cheap.

They're still live in my car! lol.

You could probably do a process similar to polishing lips. Intense sanding working your way up in grits followed by a buffer wheel for a polish and buff and then a MAG polish or something.

Thanks guys. This stainless steel is tough. That will be a project that I'll put on the bottom of the list. I have a few things to do ahead of that involved project.

If I replace a cluster it will be one with a trip computer for sure. I'm thinking about it for our S70 just for the trip computer option.

He also has a Cassette / CD player that would have been a good deal for a spare if it would have been premium. Still looking for one of those. I gave mine to my daughter because her stereo wasn't premium and was weak.

Installed the thing in the dark and it's about 1/2 inch to far forward. So I'm going to tear it out in a few minutes and reglue it back in. Looks real good, better than the other 3 scratched up sills. I did notice that it takes finger prints real well, not that anyone will ever touch them. I'll at least clean up the other ones soon.

For all that don't know what they look like, here's a pic.
