Default Rebuild 850 engine, with slung rod?

So it looks like Im going to get that 1995 850 Turbo with the blown engine, it looks kinda hard to find a decent hours Turbo engine, so Im considering the possibility of rebuilding the original. I dont know at this time what made it blow...I figure if it seized a rod the crank will need to be turned, new rod at the very least, also dont know the extent of possible valve damage from the runaway piston.

I think I may just buy this one and get it running, and later buy a nicer one I found, a low mile 1997 Silver model with low miles and all options, I think it might be a T-5 too...

I have a question...With just boost mods, what can an 850 Turbo Do in the 1/4 mile? I may have gotten cocky and made a bet with a freind at work...I want to know if I even have a shot..haha

Ill probably get the 850 Turbo this weekend, or maybe next monday when Im off again...Should take about 4 hours to get the engine plucked.

It may cost to much to rebuild that one. I would take it apart first then go from there.

It still might be cheaper to find a motor.

Not sure about the 1/4 mile run either I haven't run mine.

It's not a heavy car, and the turbo helps...still not a powerhouse. Id probably be better to find another 1990 740TIC to make into a drag car, but all I can find are 740GL's.

I mean, a Plymoth Valiant isnt exactly fast, even with a 383 and 3 speed manual...I think an 850 with the T5-R ECU or whatever you all call it, cat back and CAI should hold its own. Id expect it to go in under 15 seconds, at least.

Anyone used the lowering springs they sell online? I dont want to slam the thing, but a 3/4" drop would make the stance much more agressive, and having driven a Vette for 6 years, then a full size pickup for the past year, Im ready for a low car again..

I could always reneg on my deal, we set the limit at 1 year, $2K, and it has to be street legal...

I could raise his to 3K, and lower mine to 1500, and use the Vette instead, but stll get the volvo as a Daily driver..

I need 3 vehicles...one fast, one reliable, and one truck. Ive got the truck, Ive got the fast car, but it needs some work, now I just need something sporty and relaible, and an 850 Turbo is just that.

My buddy I made the bet with has a truck, and the Valiant, and is also looking for something more relaible and economic than both...I need to talk him into a Volvo!

Yes you need to talk him into a Volvo.

If you do some minor mods you might get into the 14's I haven't run them enough yet to know the times good.

But worked up pretty good should be able to see low 14's.

I would try to locate a motor locally or maybe even not so locally from a junkyard. If you have a LKQ near you they can get a motor from across the U.S.

Have you tried much checking locally for a motor?

I would try to get it as cheap as you can. Then fix it from there.

I think the rebuild will out do the motor swap.

I found a transmission for 300, a trunk lid, some other little things, but no motors.

I guess Ill try to fix the exterior blemishes, might try and find a T5-R front bumper like yours, Im also throwing around the idea of an egg-crate gril in place of the vertical bars...

Think...850T All blacked out, 40% tint, cleaned up turbo rims, black eggcrate grill but maintaining the silver crossbar. Projection headlights with the HALO, and It looks like someone has already put HID's on it...(there is a cheap crap switch on the dash behind the blinker stalk...what a dumb way to do it, Ill have to undo that).

But yeah, all blacked out with the above mention modifications inclusing T5-R bumper, eggcrate grill, HALO headlights....mmm and Dropped 3/4 of an inch.

Man...Is it just me or is it hot in here?

LOL its hot in here!!!!

I think that would look good but the only thing is the eggcrate grill. They were only made for the 70 series.

I think that is a XC70 grill and it will not fit the 850. Unless that is from a company that build one just for the 850.

It's built by Quick Brick Motorsports, especially for the 850 model. They said that prior to the 850, there was always a model offered that had the Eggcrate grille, be it a special edition, or a turbo model, or whatever...but for the 850, there was no such option. So they made one.

It's also cheaper than a reproduction OE unit...

It really does change the whole appearance of the front end.

R front end, eggcrate grille, with the Silver slash installed on the new grille, Halo lights, HID fogs in the bumper...OMG, and lower the stance about an inch..

Oh dear lord....

Tech, do you know if these cars have oil coolers stock?

Redoing the front end would be a great time to plumb in a big Oil cooler, adds capacity, and cools, gotta love that.

I agree that the 740 would make a better drag car....RWD . I have a 745T and There are some guys who swap to a 15G turbo (which comes on the 850 Ts) and get them into the low 14s and some have seen 13s.

If you plan on doing the rebuild, and the block is not cracked or anything serious, I would suggest that you Upgrade to forgedinternals and SS valves.
RSI has everything you need for thatand they arent too bad on pricing (Click Here).

Well, you snooze, ya lose...I got in touch to make arrangments and...Uh oh, sorry, smeone already bought that car, but we have a non-turbo model....

I did find an older ad in CL up in Alabama for a 1995 850 T-5, decked out with custom 5 spokes, Blapunkt sound system, all blacked out ,with tan leather interior, super clean car, immaculate, but it has a broken timing belt...1500 dollars.

No sense in even contacting him, you know that car is LONG GONE by now, almost 2 weeks after it was put up.

So the search continues...I can find all sorts of Volvos. 740's, 940's, 960's, even found a nice 780 Bertone Coupe, I can find 850's as well....but finding one that is a TURBO model and isnt all beat to hell, for under a grand, seems to be the challenge.
