Remote Keyless Entry Issues
Got a fun one. Some time back, both of my remotes stopped working for my 1997 850R after being intermittant for a while. I finally decided to try to get them working again. First step was to check the batteries. The voltage seemed low, so I bought new ones. Replaced the batteries and tried to reprogram them with no luck. Wondering if the system in my car was fritzing, I tried to program my son's remote from his 1997 850 GLT, and that one worked properly.
So, I pulled one of my remotes apart at work, and a component fell out. I work at a wire harness shop, but I don't know a heck of a lot about electronics. I could tell where the component broke off from, so I decided to solder it back on. The part is circled in red in the image. Sorry for the poor quality, best my cell phone can do.
Put the remote back together, heard the "click" when I hit the buttons, so I programmed it to my car again and it worked. Sort of. Both buttons now lock the system and neither one unlocks it. Messed around with it some more but it still stayed the same. Got home and took the other remote apart. The exact same component fell out, broken off the same way. Deciding to be insane and do the same thing expecting different results, I soldered this one back on too. Same results.. both buttons lock, no unlock. Anyone have any idea what this component is, and did I fry it soldering it back on? The numbers on it are KBR 1000Y, which comes up on a lot of web pages, but none with any description as to what it is. I'd rather try to fix my remotes than shell out cash for new ones, but I'm stuck at the moment on how to repair them. Any help would be appreciated!
