RE: Removing the dash Pad (To replace the instrument panel lights)
Hey now VJZ,
It seems that the bulb is dead.
To remove the dash pad is easy and will take you no more than 30 minutes start to stop.
The bulbs are very easy to replace and there are two clamps on top of the cluster that just pop off.
Just be careful of the trip reset pushbutton upon removal and replacement. You dont want to break or bend it.
The photos didnt arrange the way I wanted, but youll get the idea.

ORIGINAL: VJZ
I'm going to be doing a dash conversion to LED's soon.
I don't know what color to go with.
Probably cool white numbers with Blue needles.

Hello VJZ,
Please take a few pics of your project as it sounds very cool(blue) and Id like to do something similar. Our dash is kind of dark isnt it? Better with the trip computer light working again but a little more wouldnt hurt.
Looking forward to your completion.

OK. It's getting complicated here. i dont want to make a mistake since after I close everything I do not want to open again :-) That would be a nightmare after closing the dash, you end up with a dark instrument panel.
Here are my findings:
1 - Four big bulbs behind the speedometer and RPM gauge - WLED-x4 LED bulb (#194)
2 -The small ones behind check engine light area- B8.5D Twist Lock lamp
3 -The ones that go to the underneath to the heated seat switch - NeoWedge Instrument LED bulb
I am not sure about soem of those, such as T1.5-x Instrument LED bulb.

I think those are them.
Put all of the bulbs in and just set the top dash part on and plug the air bag in and turn the key on and check everything.
As long as the air bag is plugged in you will not set any codes in the SRS system.

Yourpictures are a great help! So, does the light for the clock require a special bulb as does the one with the trip computer? If so, what kind of bulb is needed? It is probably best to replace all the instrument bulbs at one time while you have it apart. Can you provide all the bulb numbers and locations in the instrument cluster?
Thank you in advance!

There is 4 bigger ones that are 194 bulbs. The clock and trip computer if you have one are smaller bulbs that are soldered into a base.
Some have found the bulbs else where. For me I think I would just pay the $7.00 each and be done to not have to deal with the soldering and stuff.

LED Display is the twist bulb+socket. You should have a bunch of these. See the above messages for the spec on this Bulb, although I have not personally verified it.
What I do know is that you can get these bulbs at any auto parts store that sells parts for European cars. I could not find at Advance Auto Parts or Autozone. When I fixed my odometer, I had some bulbs left over from my previous Mercedes, so I replaced some burnt ones.
I had bought these bulbs atSnitzel's Foreign Car Parts, 161 West Main Street, Clinton, CT 06414, 860-669-5733. Ask them Instrument Cluster lights. I think I paid $ 5 for 6-pack, but I could be wrong -- it was 3-4 years ago. The store though is still there.
I tried the DIY fix, but they were not like the ones used for example on the dash switches (eg. headlight switch, fog lights, Tracs, etc). These latter ones are found at Radio Shack, Part Number 272-1092 ($ 1.99 for 2-pack). Just use a small flat-head screwdriver (or pointy kitchen knife will do), remove the 2 wires from slots in the socket and pull it. You do need good eyes or a magnifying glass. Some could be so burnt that you need to break the bulb to remove them from the socket. They are kept there only by the wires. Don't try to pull without unwinding the 2 wires, because you may break the socket which is the most important part actually.

The airbag comes out with the dash as one, there is a small green clip that goes into the airbag connector under the airbag assembly itself.
First make sure all the screws behind the airvents are removed. To remove the airvents just turn them down, get ur fingers wedged at the top, and pull briskly but carefully, they pop right out to reveal the screws.
The far passenger side vent needs to be pulled out before the dash can be removed. It has no screws behind it.
Let me know if you need more help
