REMOVING THE ECU AND INSTALLING IT AGAIN
Can anyone help me. I decided to send the ECU of my Volvo to Inmotion Tunning so they can modify it. How do you remove the ECU, what precautions should I have when doing so, and at the same time, is there any risks when removing it and installing it
Let the car sit with the Key being off for over 5 minutes.
Then remove the black top cover. The ECM is teh one with Bosch on it.
The TCM has AW on it.
Slide the arm over the top of the computer and slide it out.
All will be fine as long as you don't turn the key on with it out.

I usually wait about 15 minutes after disconnecting the negative battery cable before removing the ECUs. I distantly remembered that somewhere I read that the ECUs are still powered even after the battery has been disconnected. However, this may not be true.
After removal, make sure not to touch any of the pins with your finger, as some electrostatic sensitive devices may be damaged. Wearing a wrist-band type static discharger would be perfect, but I haven't found one in the States. I'm sure they are available somewhere, but not at Radio Shack.

Also make sure you protect the ECU using anti-static bags during transportation.-

Disconnect the battery, and wait 5 minutes if your paranoid.

Both are expensive but have (normally) top notch bits.
Or you could just run wire (with a 10ohm resistor) from the cars metal work to yourself.
Static damage to car ecu's is very rare. (used to repair them - never saw one with static damage)
Thanks for all the info, but there is something that worries me, if the chip modification is done to the ECU, wont the engine and the turbo have to sustain more stress, since they ar both working harder to deliver that extra power ?. In resume, is it worth it to get the ECU modified ?.
