does the long cross shaft to the tranny just pull out or is there some kind of keeper clip or something?????

Once the two bolts for that support are removed the axle should come out of the transmission but usually you need to use a screwdriver or pry bar to kind of pop it out. It's best to use two. You are prying against the aluminum case of the transmission so you want to be gentle. It's tight in there but if you can get the tools as close as possible to opposite each other the axle should pop pretty easy.
