Default rusty metal rubbing noise coming from rear end

My Volvo sounds like red fox's truck!
sounds like it is coming from the rear end when I go over bumps. I shook the exhaust system and did not hear anything. you guys have any ideas?

Thanks,
Chet

Bounce up and down on the bumper - suspension maybe?

If not, check your e-brake pads. They may have fallen off their mounts and are bouncing around in the rotor.

that or possibly the rubber spring seat in the back is going bad. Are you sure its a rusty metal sound and not a non rusty metal sound? That makes a difference, you know...

This is what you should NOT see when looking at the shock mounts:

Red Fox's truck; i like that... "What's wrong w/my truck dummy??"

Has anyone done any suspension or brake work to it recently? If so, ck for the brake backing plate bent into the disc/rotor; this will make exactly this kind of noise.

I took a look at the left rear and it looks like the rubber stopper inside the spring has come loose. could this be the issue?

Thanks for all the ideas, as always you guys are a big help.

Chet

IIRC, the rubber thingy in the spring is not of concern nor would it make any noise. I think you can just wedge it back up where it belongs and is just pressure-fitted.

I think you need to keep searching . . . . Have you inspected the delta links?

What about a loose heat shield above the muffler?
