Thumbs down Serpentine belt 1997 850 GLT

I am looking for the length of an A/C bypass serpentine belt for my 97 850 GLT. The A/C unit is locked, and I would like to bypass it so I can use the car until I can afford to replace the entire unit.

Any information or help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

I would be surprised if someone had the length, but I guess anything is possible.

My first thought was to go to an auto parts store and tell them your car does not have A/C and see if there is a belt for it. If there is not one which I assume is the case then you'll need to do some bypassing on your own with the belt you have, cut the belt then route it around where you want it. terminate it at the top of the motor then mark it with something(chalk?). Make sure you have the tensioner moved away, all the way back, there is a locking pin section that can hold it in the wide open position while you do this. Once marked lay it out and measure it.

Smile Serpentine belt 1997 850 GLT

I am sorry, I don't know much about Volvos but my understanding is if you cut the serpentine belt to resize and fit, the only way to make it whole again, you will need some kinda belt lock metal or nylon that you use a special tool to attach to both cut sides of the belt and lock them together. It is my understanding the meld will not be as strong as if the belt was un-cut. You may end up causing more damage to engine components that way. Try autozone or someone and see if they have a similar belt, and the size you need it. Does not have to be a specific VOLVO belt. It could be a belt used on a different car, Toyota,Chevy etc. As long as the dimensions are exact.

The recommendation to cut the belt was ONLY to Measure it so you could take the measurement to an autoparts store and buy a new belt based on those measurements, not to mend it and use it again. That would be scary.

Default thank you

Thanks for the link blackbrick! That gave me enough information to find a 50 1/8" belt for less than $25 at NAPA. I will let you all know how it works!

OK, here's the skinny...

Found a belt at NAPA, part #060495, crossed over from the belt # K495 from the previous post. 50 1/8", fit perfectly!

I am now driving my Volvo again (until something else decides to fail), and enjoying the hell out of it!

Thanks for all the input, especially yours brick...

Drive fast and take chances!!!

Thanks to this thread I also solved the same issue of bypassing the AC compressor by using a shorter serpentine belt. I also used the same belt from NAPA, a 6 PK, 50 1/8" (1274mm). For reference, when I measured the distance using the old belt threaded around the pulleys, I came up with 49" (1245mm). Though I imagine using this exact length might be difficult to actually pull over the lip on the pulleys easily. So I went with the length tk1769 used which worked perfectly for me as well.
This thread was a big help, and made my 850 Turbo drivable with out having to endure and expensive repair......until I want AC again.
Thanks!
