If it is a 1993,94,95 I can tell you how to do it.
If it is a 1996, or 1997 you need a special tool to do it.

You didn't specify what year yours was.

Volvo tester is a diagnostic equipment only available among Volvo dealers (officially anyway). You may be able to find oneat eBay, etc... but I don't know as I never bought anything off ob eBay so far.

Go to ebay.co.uk and get the Draper tool. Worked fine on my 98 V70, which is pretty much the same as a 97 850. Paid about $85 for it after currency conversion.
