service light
What year is it? You know there's a Check Engine light and a service light. If it's the service light, it's programmed to go on every 5000 miles or so. It can be reset. The check engine light is the one that has the codes.
The year of the car makes a difference. 1995 and earlier is OBD-I which means the codes can be pulled from under the hood by yourself. 1996+ is OBD-II. In this case, the dealer will most likely charge you to read the codes. You can either buy an OBD-II code reader to pull the codes yourself or you can go to an Autozone parts store and they will read the codes for free.
