Service light reset
Is there a way I can reset the "Service" light on my 1997 Volvo 850? I removed the dash to fix the odometer and now the light is on for several minutes after starting the car.
On your 1997 it has to be reset through the OBD-II port with Volvo specific programs. The dealer can do it for sure but you can also do it with VOL-FCR software and a VAG-COM cable. Rumor has it that the software is floating around on Bit Torrent but that whole thing kinda weirds me out. The VOL-FCR can also read and reset a lot of Volvo specific stuff like ABS and SRS that a regularcode reader won't deal with. The cable can be had on eBay for under $20.00.
The real way to fix the service light would have been to take it out wile the cluster was out, throw it down the street, and just for good measure go stomp on it to make sure it could never come back again.

BTW where did you see the cable for sale?
I downloaded a demo of the software and have a chinese knockoff VagCom for my Jetta. I bought one on Ebay for like 15 dollars. I have a 94 so I am reluctant to try it out. I might try over the weekend I am pretty sure it should not hurt the car any.

I got mine from a guy in Oklahoma City but I can't find the seller in my records.
Most laptops these days have no serial port but I think that is why we kept those old IBM Thinkpads around after the batteries died. Extension cord to the car!

The "Cracked Version" of VOL-FCR that is rumored to be floating around is the serial version. Most of the cables on eBay are for a USB port. There is one guy currently listing the serial cable from Hong Kong - I think it is a buy it now for around $8.00 + $16.00 or so in freight. A search of VAG-COM on eBay should bring up the choices.
